Volunteering
With regard to volunteerism, I hold two quotes dear to me:
First, "making a buck is easy. Making a difference is
more difficult" (Tom Brokaw). And second, it has been
said that those who can't give their money, can give something
more valuable - their time. I do believe that, and the hours
I dedicate to volunteering can attest to that.
I am actively involved in the animal (canine) rescue world
through different rescues (right now it is the Northwest
Canadian Greyhound League), and I am a Docent at the Calgary
Zoo. A Docent is a volunteer teacher - we give tours through
the Zoo facilities (including behind the scenes with some
of the animals), and hold information/education sessions for
the public using "Bio Facts" (pelts, skulls, etc.) or Animal
Handling. All of this is done to spread the word on the importance
of education and wildlife conservation.
Business
I currently have a few part-time jobs to go with my full-time job:
5 days per week, I am a Coordinator of Volunteer Resources at the Calgary Zoo.
One semester per year, I am a Sessional Instructor at the University of Calgary in the faculty
of Communication
and Culture. Titled Information Technology and Society,
the course I teach examines the impact of information technology
on society, individual psychology and concepts of knowledge.
A few semesters per year, I am a Sessional Instructor for the faculty of Continuing Education of the University of Calgary. I teach a course titled Learning Online. The course is aimed at easing any concerns students may have with attending online classes and learning online.
